Cork Internet eXchange is Ireland’s first professional datacentre outside Dublin. It’s been conceived and built by three local entrepreneurs: Jerry Sweeney Tom Raftery and Adam Beecher and will open for business on January 2nd 2008.

Of course, once CIX is up and running, physical access will be highly restricted for security reasons. So last month’s Open Day was a unique opportunity to visit a professional datacentre and see how they go about providing a secure and stable environment for internet infrastructure.

Intruders.TV interviewed two of the directors of CIX: Tom Raftery and Adam Beecher. They told us about the inspiration for CIX, and the 18-month building project which has made it a reality. They pointed out that this is a market which is undersupplied in Ireland in general, and in the Munster region in particular. There are only 8 other professional datacentres in Ireland, and they are all in Dublin.

They talked passionately and knowledgeably about the technical details of their project. In fact, they’ve gone into even more detail on their blog at cix.ie As they put it: running a datacentre is all about customer confidence. What better way to address that than with a blog?
