Go back to school and learn something, but I doubt that will save you, as you'll never make it in business or the web.

You must be short and balding and less than average in looks, aren't you? I'll bet your were the little guy at school who always got picked on... nerdy and alone..... still to this day it seems. Yes, even the girls made fun of you, your crooked teeth, your zits.. so sad. You never went to the prom and now... well now you live on the computer because it makes you feel like a man, a real man, a big man. But hey Paul, don't give up! There's another guy out there for you, maybe a computer geek who still lives at home looking to move out and he could move in with you and your mom! I'm sure he likes to pretend about things too. I know! he's at Dave and Buster's 'cause he like video games too - go there, go now! Wish I could stay and chat some more but I have a life and I've spent far too much time splitting hairs with the likes of you. It's been fun, take caer, good luck with your mate search, bye bye!

Katie - "Here's a Tip": Jesus" is spelled with an upper case "J".

Yep, and the word isn't 'spelled' - it's SPELT actually. Gathering ammunition to make yourself feel superior in a war of words, still leaves you as you are - eg: Nowhere - except satisfied in the knowledge that you competed in a bitching session on a forum.

Copying ideas to death doesn't help industry in any way, it only serves to saturate an already uninteresting market - and many are sick of unoriginal ideas. Everyone thinks they can stick up a website and make money - everyones a winner - NOT. Even if the idea IS unique, the kids just don't have the expertise to make it a success, nor the heap of cash required to buy presence, branding and build a website up to a point it can be sold for millions.

Trouble is the word 'dumb' is appropriate, because webmasters are so wrapped up in their 'low budget, bad idea before they even start' - sites, they just don't know how tough this is - and thus will fail every time. Making pennies is the best they will ever do from these ventures, and it's really laughable that they bother.

Lack of planning and bad ideas - yes I would call it dumb for sure.

If you're going to use Car dealers as some reference to make a point, then at least be intelligent enough to make the point in writing. But to answer you - back then Cal Worthington was probably advised using weird PR strategies, which worked in those days, but wouldn't be acceptable now. But what worked years ago will not work now eg: old methods lose effectiveness over time!

You were trying to get all clever by quoting from history, unfortunately they say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and seems to be a common strategy used by webmasters. My advice to you is - if you want to be an expert, that's fine, but go and get a Diploma in the subject first - then you will have earnt that right - officially!

But it takes much more than a Diploma to be that millionaire everyone seems to crave.......... Few realise this and there's no license to print money in this world, it takes hard work and there's no other way of doing it..

"...we'd never see anything new happening on the net. " ----- Normally I'd agree with that, except Brownbook isn't unique or new, as Yellow Pages did this years ago.

From your attacking response I take it that your a dumb webmaster, who hangs out at forums and blogs pretending to be somebody - jesus, get a life!

Oh and I didn't mention my company because:

A. It's none of your business
B. I'm not as desperate for crap links as you are
C I use the Media to advertise

And because I use the media, I have more money than you do - so keep your idiotic millionaire insults to yourself.

Research? Lattie, I run my own publishing company, so I guess that answers your question. Much more to brownbook? - I have seen the site, it's okay - but not exceptional or unique. Like the interviewer asked " Are there not similar services online already?" Dave Ingram couldn't say a simple Yes and agree, because it would have a negative effect eg: zero sales, but 'Yes' is the correct response and a very big fact. Instead he avoided that particular question, and babbled on about 'user generated content' , he might as well have said "We attempted to copy Yell.com". At least it would be honest........

The general SE market is flooded with copycat directories/engines, but users want more than basic lists of companies, and adding user content won't make folks spend money alone - it's a lot harder than that, or we'd all be millionaires wouldn't we.

Why would I want to ask about the plans of yet another Yell copycat that won't be heard of again? And if he did work for Scoot and Thomson then he would know they have too big a hold on the market and that something original is required to compete and gain market share. Yell.com is a £400 million company, and Brownbook is going to take them out?, well, I'll eagerly await the Brownbook news flash on BBC news then.

Here's a tip: The Bedroom Brigade never learn.

Chris, sorry buddy, but it seems that you don't listen very well or do very thorough reserach. There's much more to Brownbook than what you've seem to discovered in this short , taped interview. Hasn't your mother told you, "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say it at all!?". Besides, have you bothered to ask them what their plans for the future are or how they "see" their site changing over time? Here's a hug for you: Ego is nothing more than Fear.

Okay, so it's a directory with added user opinion, with a Wiki modifier. I see what you are trying to do, but it's still just another general directory alongside the other 10'000 £25 directory scripts out there. I can't see how this benefits the web, when we already have Yell.com, Thomson, Scoot and Reed Business.

Simply put - saying you add user reviews does not make this specialist. Nothing unique or different about this. Very difficult model to make work and tough to prise visitors away from the Yellow Pages of this world.

You will need much more than a feedback system or user generated content to make this work. Anyone can do this, and have......

I really enjoyed Dave's interview and am honored to be a part of his venture! It's rare that we get a chance to hear the "behind the scenes details" and I definitely resonate with Dave's passion and goals. I love the power of the internet having originally found BrownBook through a lead at SalonGeek, a popular forum in the UK for those in the beauty industry. I will be sure to pay-it-forward by encouraging other business owners here in the US to get their spot and pay for an enhanced listing. All the best, Kelly Robertson
